Southern Indiana Portapotty Rentals

Southern Indiana is a beautiful region of Indiana that boasts a varied topography and unique, historical towns. This is especially true for the town and counties surrounding Louisville, KY. Part of the Kentuckiana region, this area offers convenient locations leading into Louisville, as well as further north, east, and west into Indiana. Moon Companies is proud to offer Southern Indiana portapotty rentals to all citizens and business owners!

What to Do in Southern Indiana

On the Indiana side of the Ohio, there is a great deal of history in everything from the land to the buildings. This is true for all the different Kentuckiana region counties that Moon Companies serves!

Harrison County

Did you know that Indianapolis has not always been the capitol of Indiana? That’s right! The city of Corydon was actually the state’s first capitol, and now acts as county seat. Harrison county hosts a variety of fun things to do, including outdoor adventures, delicious restaurants, breweries, and more! Most notably, Harrison County is home to both Indiana Caverns and Squire Boone Caverns, popular underground caves. However, you’ll also find the site of the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana soil at the Battle of Corydon Historic site. For a full list of activities, restaurants, and places to stay in Harrison County, visit their online visitor’s center.

Floyd County

Even as the second-smallest county in the state, Floyd County is home to plenty of different things to do. Its county seat of New Albany sits on the banks of the Ohio River and is one of three ways to cross from Indiana to Louisville, Kentucky via the Sherman Minton bridge. New Albany is also home to the Indiana University Southeast campus. History buffs can visit the Culbertson Mansion, the Cardinal Ritter Home, Padgett Museum, or the Town Clock Church. For those who want to tune into nature, Floyd County also hosts Mount Saint Francis, Loop Island Wetlands, and the longest tunnel in Indiana, the Duncan Tunnel. You can visit their online visitor’s center for a full list of festivals, celebrations, art galleries, parks, and recreational areas.

Clark County

The neighboring Clark County also borders the Ohio River and is home to three other bridges leading into Louisville: the Big Four Pedestrian Bridge, the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge (2nd Street Bridge), and the twin Abraham Lincoln Bridge and John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge. There are plenty of outdoor opportunities in Clark County, including the oldest exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world at the Falls of the Ohio National Wildlife Conservation Area. Visitors can also take a hike through Charlestown State Park, Clark State Forest, Deam Lake State Recreation Area, and others. Huber’s Family Farm, Winery, and Restaurant is a great, family-friendly trip as well, offering U-Pick apples, vegetables, flowers, berries, grapes, pumpkins, and other produce. Finally, anyone with a sweet tooth will enjoy the Schimpff’s Confectionery & Candy Museum. This candy emporium is one of the oldest, continuously-operated, family-owned candy businesses in the U.S.!

Jefferson County

Jefferson County is located to the east of Scott County. Its county seat is held by Madison, IN, a historic town with a popular district dedicated to architecture and landmarks. Jefferson County is home to Clifty Falls State Park for hikers, canoers, swimmers, kayakers, and picnickers. Visitors can also enjoy beautiful gardens and delicious wines at places such as Lanthier Winery, Stream Cliff Farm, Restaurant, and Winery, and Mad Paddle Brewstillery.

Washington County

Part of the Louisville Metropolitan area, Washington County is the northern border county for the rest of this Kentuckiana region. Salem, IN holds its county seat. Within the county’s borders, historical landmarks like Beck’s Mill (a listed location on the National Register of Historic Places) are plentiful. Families can visit the John Hay Center Museum and Pioneer Village with historical renditions of life in the 1830s. They can also explore the beautiful nature at the Blue River Natural and Scenic River System, Jackson – Washington County State Forest, or Knobstone Trail. This is the longest hiking trail in Indiana at the moment at 58 miles, and there are plans to extend it even further. However, a coalition of Indiana counties have another 62-mile trail coming soon as well: the Monon South Trail! Visit Washington County to do it all.

Home to 3 distilleries on the Bourbon Trail and a lot of Louisville history, Moon Portable Restrooms is proud to offer porta potty rentals in Shively, KY!

Shively History and Community Development

Shively, KY is home rule-class city bordering the west-end of Louisville, KY. This city is considered a suburb of Louisville, due to its inclusion within the Louisville Metro Government. According to the 2020 census, the population has grown by 2.4% from 2010 to 15,636 people. The city of Shively includes a total of 4.6 square miles, 0.01 square miles of it water.

Shively is home to 6 of Louisville’s schools:

  • Butler Traditional High School
  • Western High School
  • Mill Creek Elementary School
  • Cane Run Rd Elementary
  • Schaffner Elementary
  • Waller Williams Environmental

Shively has a deep connection with the City of Louisville dating all the way back to the founding in 1778. Throughout its life, it has been a farm, a mill, a tavern, and a legal Prohibition distillery site, amongst other things. After its economy boost with the opening of 8 distilleries after the end of Prohibition, Shively was thriving. Because of this, Louisville attempted to annex both the residential and business districts. However, they were only successful in annexing the residential portion in 1938.

Unfortunately, as the city grew, so did the scandals – especially after the economy dropped with the closing of several distilleries. Shively has been known as “Lively Shively” in the past due to prostitution and adult entertainment in the area. The city was also the site of the Wade Incident of 1954. Despite these struggles, Shively has seen a lot of improvement with the help of public works projects and a focus on community development and tourism.

Things to Do in Shively, KY

Shively is an official stop in the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, so if you are interested in Kentucky’s drink of choice, Shively might be on your list! The city features a myriad of distilleries, including Michter’s Distillery, Stitzel-Weller Distillery, and the Brown-Forman Distillery, which is a Bulleit Bourbon tourist attraction.

Shively is also very near several popular Louisville attractions. It is only a short drive to fun places such as Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby Museum, the University of Louisville, the Speed Art Museum, Kentucky Kingdom & Hurricane Bay, and Altitude Trampoline park. In addition to this, the city has two parks for visitors and residents to enjoy: Shively Park and Leeds Park. Shively Park is 21 acres and includes gazebos, tennis courts, plenty of play places for children, a fountain, and a retired army tank. It also sits right next to the Shively police station, City Hall, and the Shively Library.

It can be overwhelming to see all the different types of portable restrooms that Moon offers! We’re here to break it down for you, based on your specific needs.

Restrooms Vs. Trailers

Here at Moon, we offer two broad categories of restroom equipment: restrooms and trailers. Restrooms are single serve, “porta-potty” style structures. We offer a standard portable restroom, a flushable portable restroom, and a handicap equipped portable restroom.

The other type of equipment we offer are restroom trailers and shower trailers for large commercial and personal events. These vary in size, features, and level of accessibility. Interested in a handicap accessible trailer? Explore the Executive ADA Restroom trailer! This ADA compliant trailer has three private cabins that feature cabinetry, hardwood flooring, and wainscoting.

We have the largest selection of trailers in the region–contact us today to learn more about which is best for your purposes.

Luxury Restroom Trailers

One of our most popular offerings are luxury restroom trailers, perfect for weddings and sophisticated events. These trailers come equipped with not only sinks, mirrors, and flushing toilets, but even AC and heat! Interested? Check out the luxurious Comfort Elite Platinum Plus, which offers a full size vanity, a wood grain floor, mirrors, cabinetry, subway tile, and even a built-in stereo! It’s these little details that make your special event memorable!

How Many Portable Restrooms Should I Rent?

Wedding season. How festive a time with just as much chaotic energy and stress as there are nuptial joys – a good wedding might seem put together from the outside, but if you’ve ever planned an event, then you might know how the minute details make all the difference. From how level the ground is for the ceremony to the number of chairs there needs to be, there’s always something to be outlined and calculated. Within these calculations, there’s also the question of portable restrooms: how many will you need? Which kind will be the best for your wedding? How long will you need the units for?

There are several factors that go into successfully have portable toilets at your wedding, and Moon Portable Restrooms are here to help you brainstorm some of the important considerations you’ll need to think about as you research our portable restroom rentals!

Amount of Guests

Perhaps one of the most important deciding factors for the question, the amount of guests will influence the other factors, as well. OSHA laws require construction sites to have at least one toilet for 20 workers, and that’s generally a lower number on the range that the hospitality industry suggests when it comes to guests, which is 1 toilet per 20-50 guests. The more guests you have, though, the more toilets you will need, and it’s recommended that you err on the side of safety with larger guests lists that reach into the 100-200 range.

Budget

If you have a set budget, the amount of guests you have will affect whether you’ll want to have a larger amount of toilets with the more affordable standard portable restrooms or splurge on fewer toilets but have access to our luxury portable restrooms. While we make all of our units as clean and attractive as possible, we usually recommend our luxury restrooms for high-budget weddings due to the additional amenities you get that fits the bill.

Trailer or Toilet

On the subject of amenities, in addition to our different types of portable restrooms accommodating different amounts of people, they also offer different amenities. Our standard portable toilets accommodate one guest at a time, but our trailers range in size from one men’s and one women’s cabin to commercial size, with 5 stalls in one cabin.

Our portable restroom trailers also offer those amenities you might be looking for, such as:

  • Flushable, porcelain toilets
  • Urinals
  • Stainless steel sinks with soap and paper towel dispensers
  • Vanities
  • Woodgrain flooring and other aesthetic additions
  • Air conditioning and heat

Accessibility

If you know that your guests will require a wheelchair or health aid-accessible toilet, then we have ADA compliant portable toilets and portable restroom trailers. These ADA portable toilets can be used by individuals who don’t need the accessibility, of course, but you may want to consider getting an ADA restroom in addition to a regular unit when planning for facilities.

Venue

As always, check with your venue and be aware of how much space you have available for your use, any restrictions the venue might place on size or type of portable restroom, and what the location of your venue is like geographically. Is it hilly? Does it meet the requirements for our portable restroom rentals? Our products will list any spatial or geographical needs in it’s description, but Moon always welcomes inquiries about our units!

To contact us with questions or to secure your portable restroom rental, call us at 502-776-2199, fill out a contact form on our website, or get a quote for your wedding reception today!

Where It Comes From and Where It Goes: How a Flushable Portable Toilet Works

Moon Portable Restrooms is proud to have so many different models for different events and needs available for those in the Kentucky area, especially our flushable portable toilets and upscale restroom trailers with running water or showers!

Flushable portable toilets in Kentucky

When people think of portable restrooms, oftentimes, the only thing that comes to mind is a standard port-a-potty, baking in the sun without anything except the flies, a lock, a toilet, and – if you’re lucky – a roll of thin, one-ply toilet paper. With Moon standard portable toilets, you’ll get an experience better than that because we practice proper maintenance and sanitation, but standard units still aren’t the most exciting portable toilets out there no matter how well-kept they are.

Our flushable portable toilet units are a different story! These premium portable toilets offer larger floor space, a handwashing station, and the flushing mechanism that makes this upgrade worth the investment. The sanitary hands-free flushing foot pump is all you need to flush unsightly evidence of waste away and give off the impression that you’re business is your business. It has a capacity for up to 150 flushes, too, so you likely won’t need any more of them than you would a standard port-a-potty!

While flushable portable toilets seem like a great idea, how exactly do they work? And how do they manage to keep enough water to flush 150 times before they run out?

How a Moon Flushable Portable Restroom Works

Flushable Portable toilets are usually made of 4-5 core components:

  • A Toilet Seat
  • A Holding Tank
  • A Flushing Mechanism
  • A Pressure System
  • An Optional Additional Storage Tank

It’s difficult to believe that one flushable portable restroom could hold enough water for 150 flushes, but it all depends on how much water is being used to flush!

Flushable Portable Restrooms in Louisville KY for rentUnlike traditional residential toilets that require plumbing to bring waste and wastewater out via pipes to the sewer system, flushable portable toilets do not reply on the sewer system as they’re being used. Instead, since all waste is contained in a hidden holding tank directly underneath the toilet that is equipped with chemicals to eliminate odors, break all solid waste down (including toilet paper, which is why it’s usually so thin), and kill germs, gravity does a bulk of the work! The flushing mechanism simply facilitates the movement and guides all leftover matter down as well for a clean toilet every time from either a separate tank of clean water or using diluted deodorizing chemicals from the holding tank.

After approximately 150 flushes, the holding tank must be emptied and refilled with water to flush, which we’ll take care of! Additional holding tanks are available, and we’ll be happy to consult with you to figure out the best course of action on how many flushable units you’ll need for your event. Contact us or fill out a free quote form today!

How Long in Advance Should You Plan Your Wedding?

Christmas and the New Year – what a wonderful time of happiness and family and gifts, but also the perfect time for a proposal. With so many deals and discounts, it’s no wonder that it’s one of the most popular times of the year to get engaged! If you found your forever partner and are now expecting to tie the knot sometime soon, you might be wondering what your wedding timeframe should be.

Well, it’s probably all very dependent on what you want for your special day. How in-demand is the venue you have your eye on? What about the caterer and the florist? How far booked out is your photographer?

That might seem like a vague answer, so to make it easier, most wedding experts will tell you that planning a year to 18 months in advance is usually going to be your best bet, but there are always exceptions. Depending on what time time of year you want to get married and how set you are on having specific vendors for your wedding, it could be more like 24 months, or if you’re doing it DIY or small-scale, it could be as short as 3-4 months!

Either way, experts also recommend taking the month right after you get engaged to stop, celebrate, and make big decisions with your new fiancé before any other planning begins.

Pre-Planning Decisions

In order for the wedding to go smoothly, both partners should have a good idea of what they envision for their wedding, and then to compromise if need be. Even if one partner has more investment in how the wedding looks or what they want there, both should be involved in this pre-planning period, because this is where big decisions get made.

  1. What season do you want the wedding?
  2. Do you want a long or a short engagement?
  3. What’s the wedding budget?
  4. If there’s a honeymoon, when will it be taken?
  5. How many people will be invited?
  6. How big will the wedding party be?

The average engagement period is 13-16 months in the US, so don’t feel like you have to rush, or like you have to wait that long at all! It’s nice to just celebrate love and the engagement in and of itself, so don’t feel pressured to begin planning the big ticket items straight away, especially if you already know you want a long engagement, since that gives you a timeframe forgiving of potential accidents that can take time to fix.

What’s the Next Step in Planning a Wedding?

Once you’ve figured out the answers to these questions, it will be much easier to start the heavy-duty planning after. For example, after a season has been chosen, it will be easier then to choose a specific date for your big day, and that timeframe is the most important part of planning, since everything else revolves around it from booking a venue to letting your vendors know when they’ll need to provide their services. And since you’ll know your budget and your target guest limit, your next step of finding and booking a venue will be made a little easier, since a lot of venues are booked a year in advance, but you’ve already talked about limits and constraints.

Make sure you know what kind of food you’re looking for and if the caterer is able to work within your chosen venue’s contract. Sometimes, certain venues will have guidelines or even a list of approved caterers that you’ll have to choose from, so if food is an important part of your wedding, plan accordingly! Your other vendors should be booked sooner rather than later, as well, such as:

  • Florists
  • Make-up and hair stylists
  • Photographers
  • Videographers
  • DJs
  • Bar services
  • Bakers
  • Portable restroom services
  • Clean up services
  • Etc.

You always want to make sure that each service has an opening for your date, especially if you’re looking for a specific provider!

Finally, when it comes to ‘save the dates’ and invitations, a good recommended timeframe to start sending out your paper or digital invitations is 6-8 months from your chosen date or ASAP for ‘save the dates’ and then 6-8 weeks from the wedding for invitations. And closer to the date might be cutting it close for some guests, so you’ll want to make sure you give them plenty of time to RSVP and plan for travel, childcare, pet care, and to purchase any gifts they might want to give. You should also be looking for flights or travel costs for your own honeymoon around the time you send out the ‘save the dates’ so that you can get a good grasp on how much you’ll be paying for travel, lodgings, food, etc. and factor that into how much you’ll be willing to pay for the other wedding services.

Can you be disqualified for going to the bathroom in golf?

Golfing Disqualifications: Going to the Bathroom

When it comes to summertime sports and the transition into fall athletic pastimes, everyone may have their own ideas of an ideal sport to play or watch. Due to weather transitions and a pick-up of activity in the autumn months, it’s easy to fall into a sport played in the outdoors, with indoor options if need be. Golf, however, is not one of those sports that has an indoor option.

No, if you want to play a full game, weather plays an important role in the proceedings. Storms and inclement weather can put a stop to it, but heat can, as well. Fall presents a wonderful time to play golf, with temperatures settling at more bearable levels and a beautiful show of the changing of seasons coming to town. The President’s Cup was just played a couple of weeks ago, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina from September 20 – 25.

September seems like a reasonable time of the year to expect cooler temperatures, right?

Well, on an ideal day, maybe. Summer heat seems to be stretching further and further into the year, and golfers must be ready to face the heat with portable fans and lots of hydration. But, with hydration, there comes the question of bathroom breaks – unless you’re at a high-end club with a bathroom or two strategically placed on or near the course, it seems you’re tough out of luck, and might have to escape to a thatch of trees or all the way back to the clubhouse if you want to do your business.

Except, if you’re a serious golfer competing in competitions, it seems that bathroom breaks could potentially earn you a disqualification.

Bathroom Breaks Aren’t Illegal in Golf, Right?

Well, unaccounted for bathroom breaks certainly have caused a stink for players in the past, that’s for sure.

In 2019, a 16 year old golfer participating in the U.S. Open sectional qualifying was disqualified after taking a bathroom break prior to turning his score card in due to an illness. And, while his coach and father cited the rule interpretation 5.6a/2, which states that, “if a player gets a sudden illness or injury (such as from heat exhaustion, a bee sting or being struck by a golf ball), the Committee should normally allow that player up to 15 minutes to recover before the player’s failure to continue play would be unreasonably delaying play.”

In this instance, the player returned around 15 minutes after the other players turned their score cards in and then failed to mention his illness, which is what led to his disqualification.

But that’s not the only time a golfer has been disqualified or docked for answering nature’s call – in 2017, two golfers got penalized in the same Women’s NCAA Golf Championship on different occasions for taking a golf cart to drive them to the closest facilities. This broke the regulation stating that, “a player must not ride on any form of transportation during a stipulated round unless authorized.” (Apparently, bathroom breaks are not authorized.)

Each player took a two-stroke penalty, which fortunately did not affect their teams or placement in the finals.

But this does seem to present a bit of a gendered-rift between regulations that can influence bathroom breaks. It’s been well known that male golfers can find a place as open as behind a cart or trash bin and do their business – it’s not so easy for women. Some might quote the existence of FUD — female urinary device — that lets the user go while standing up, but women, if wanting the same privacy and coverage as men, still have a more difficult time in finding a spot out of eyeshot of galleries and cameras. There is no simple “zipper down, release, zipper up,” and that makes finding a permanent or portable restroom pretty essential.

Portable Restrooms on the Green and Off

It seems that it may be a good idea to give portable restrooms a much bigger role in golf outings than we should like to think. Out of 18 holes, surely there would be a need at least once or twice – and at least you’d be protected from any airborne projectiles that golf is known for.

We hardly believe we’d make a case at this year’s President’s cup, but Moon Portable Restrooms likes to focus on our customers here in the Kentucky and Southern Indiana regions –  providing the clean, spacious portable restrooms, flushable restrooms, holding tanks, containment trays, and hand washing/sanitizing stations that we’re known for.

Top Tips for Outdoor Event Planning

10 Tips for Hosting an Outdoor Event During the Pandemic

Thinking about surprising a loved one with an outdoor birthday party? Getting married? Looking to host a concert or movie night for your business or organization? Planning a race? Working on finally having that family reunion?

If you have an event in the works or have planned an event before, you probably know how difficult it is to coordinate every little thing. There are so many moving parts–food, venue, entertainment, music, guest’s needs–and there’s almost always some sort of unplanned hurdle, like bad weather, a picky eater, or technical difficulties.

What’s more, hosting a safe, fun event during the pandemic is tricky. You want to be able to connect and celebrate, but you don’t want to compromise the health of your guests, friends, or loved ones. That’s why many people have turned to outdoor gatherings as the ideal way to stay socially-distanced while still being able to meet in-person.

With spring just around the corner, there’s no better time to make sure you’re up-to-speed with the logistics and possible hang-ups you could face as an outdoor event planner. Whether you’re a seasoned expert or this is your first time planning an event, follow along!

1. Visit the Venue in Advance

This may seem obvious, but many people try to “just wing it” based on positive Yelp reviews or Instagram photos. Don’t be that person. Scope out your chosen venue in advance. Examine the geography of the space–Is it hilly? Windy? Muddy? Exceptionally dark? Nobody wants to get married in the shadow of a building! Feel free to measure or draw on paper where you will place things. Making sure you have the perfect spacing of tables, buffets, chairs, bathrooms, bars, parking spots, etc. is especially important during Covid.

2. Check Permits and Ordinances

Certain outdoor spaces, even in public parks, require paid permits or preliminary reservations. Do your research before showing up. Make sure there are no restrictive curfews, seasonal regulations, party size limitations, or conflicting events happening in the same space.

3. Plan For Accessibility

Making sure your event is inclusive and accommodating for those with disabilities, dietary concerns, or certain physical needs is very important to consider. Do you have wheelchair access? Have you met everyone’s dietary concerns or removed certain allergens from the menu? If you’re showing a movie, video, or on-screen presentation, do you have captions, large print, or an assistive listening device? If you need more information, check out this Accessibility Checklist by Cornell University.

4. Get Electrical

If you’re hosting an event with music or entertainment of any sort, chances are you’ll need plenty of electrical outlets. Many outdoor venues don’t have electricity, so bringing extension cords or a mobile power inverter may be necessary.

5. Who’s Going to Make It Happen?

What kind of staff will you need to make your event happen? If you’re hosting a tiny family gathering, you can probably manage as a party of one, but in most circumstances, you’ll need help! Will you have an entertainer, like a DJ, musician, or band? Do you need a catering staff to serve food or beverages? Need maintenance assistance to set up the space and keep the venue clean and orderly? Want vendors to sell wares? Considering a collaboration with a professional decorator or florist? Did you think about hiring a photographer to capture your precious memories? Do you need security if you have VIP personnel? … Maybe you just want a private event manager to handle it all for you! We’d understand.

6. Rain Check!

A rainy forecast doesn’t have to ruin your outdoor event. Many outdoor spaces can easily accommodate covered areas like marquees, patios, and tents, but should be coordinated and confirmed in advance. Otherwise, consider choosing a backup space to move to in the chance of inclement weather.

7. Where Do I Sit?

People care about their comfort, and you should too. Make sure to have plenty of adequate seating, especially if you’re serving a meal. Assigned seating can be a great idea to keep large parties settled. Elderly people in particular will need a space to rest. If the weather is especially hot, people will want somewhere to cool down.

8. Food!

Food builds connection between friends and family, establishing a shared experience. Making sure you have a great selection of food is vital. Have you met the needs of gluten-free guests, sugar-free guests, vegans, vegetarians, or those with an allergy? Consider the age range and demographics of your party–a child’s birthday party will have a very different menu than a lavish soiree. Coordinating the meal is also important–will it come out in courses? Is it a buffet? When will it happen, before or after the presentation? The planning, preparation, serving, and cleanup of food is far more complex than you’d think!

9. Figure Out Your Covid Plan

Adhering to social-distancing and Covid safety guidelines is a crucial concern. Seating guests in reasonably-separated spaces, providing plenty of room for walk-ways and lines to gather, limiting party size, and making sure you’re on the same page as your event staff is important to consider. If you’re going to require masks or proof of vaccination, be sure to let your guests know far in advance. Also, have a way of properly and discretely enforcing these policies–nobody wants to attend a superspreader event!

10. Secure The Sanitation!

If you haven’t thought about your bathroom situation, now’s the time. Making sure your guests have access to pleasant, comfortable restrooms is vital. Nobody wants to wait in line–make sure you have enough units to accommodate your party size. Having hand washing or sanitization stations may be advisable as well.
